Frequently asked questions
Does an extension give me more time to pay?
No. A federal or Georgia extension extends the time to file, generally to October 15, but tax owed is still due on the original April deadline. Paying an estimate with the extension helps limit interest and penalties.
Do I need a separate Georgia extension?
Georgia accepts a valid federal extension for individual returns. If you owe Georgia tax, the payment is still due in April and is generally sent with Georgia Form IT-560.
What happens when a due date falls on a weekend or holiday?
The deadline moves to the next business day. The table above already shows the moved date where that applies.
Who has to make estimated payments?
Generally, people who expect to owe $1,000 or more in federal tax after withholding and credits, which often includes self-employed people, landlords, and investors. Georgia has a similar requirement with its own threshold.
Are there other business deadlines not shown here?
Yes. Payroll tax deposits, sales tax filings, and Georgia annual registration have their own schedules that depend on your business. We keep a calendar for each business client.
